On 20 November, some 100 3Mers, their families and friends, alongside 15,000 Hong Kong people, joined the Community Chest’s New Territories Walk for Millions held at the Cross Bay Link, Tseung Kwan O, to raise funds for 24 member agencies which provides Family and Child Welfare Services supported by the Chest. This event marks the return of in-person Walk for Millions after a two-year hiatus since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
All 3Mers and guests gathered at 7.30 am and arrived at the starting point at 8 am. They were divided into two teams. The VIP team, led by Cynthia Lai and Andy Wong, as well as the flag-bearer Jeff Chu, was invited to take part in the starting ceremony and took group photos with the officiating guest Chief Secretary of Administration Chan Kwok-ki GBS, IDSM, JP and the Chairpersons of the Walk for Millions. 3MHK Love & Care Volunteer Team Chairman Vincent Mak led the other team.
The charity walk started near the junction of Po Yap Road and Po Shun Road in TKO, then proceeded along a new road leading to the TKO interchange and further onto the Cross Bay Link. Walkers then returned to the finish line at a landscaped desk of the new Tong Yin Street. The total distance was about 6 km and took around 1.5 hours to complete.
The focus of this walk is the HK$5.6 billion, 1.8-kilometer Cross Bay Link - the first marine viaduct in Hong Kong with a carriageway, cycle track and footpath. The centrepiece of the Link is the 200m-span tied arch bridge with two leaning arch ribs. When looking from afar, its appearance resembles the mathematical symbol of infinity. The Link is also designed with viewing platforms on the bridge, allowing walkers to savour unobstructed views of Junk Bay and the Eastern Channel. This new infrastructure provides an alternative access route to cope with huge traffic demand in the district, expected to shorten the commuting time between Tseung Kwan O and Kowloon East by 20 minutes.
To make the walk even more interesting, a photo contest themed “Love” was organized. 3Mers could share the moments they loved during the trek.
